We took the decision early on in the process of making this film, and in consultation with the museum, to reproduce recognisable images from the Psalter rather than to reinterpret them. To start selectively disagreeing with elements in the pictures would be to introduce a whole new level of opinion and interpretation. Better, we thought, to work closely with the Master and open such issues for wider debate.
To balance this literal approach, we are making a number of documentaries to accompany the film. This will give an opportunity to amplify the many points that this style raises - not least of which is the interesting problem surrounding the illustrators’ choice of colours for clothing.
